I've spent my share of evenings drunkenly banging away at the piano pretending to be Justin Vernon.
So this one's dedicated to Mr Bon Iver himself.
I wrote this one some years back working through my own so-called dark night of the soul, with a nod to Plato's Allegory of the Cave.
Enjoy.
lyrics
If love is hell
& hell is other people
& all our best intentions
lead to the same ol' destinations
Where does that leave us?
Lord knows I've tried
to be a better man
But my lack of inspiration
& my lazy inclinations
Will they foreshadow unmet ends?
Well, I've spent my life inside
The Cave mistaking shadows for the light
Now I'm free to finally walk outside
& feel the warmth surround me
Oh, let it in
What is sacred?
What is holy?
Is life not the process of dying slowly?
What is righteous?
Is all this only
a myth to pacify the lonely?
Or a truth we sacrifice atoning?
If only time will tell
tell us which way it is moving
Some years have passed in seconds
Yet the seconds move so slow
Won't you tell me which way does it flow?
Now my life is halfway over
& time is wearing thin
Wearing memories like a blanket
a patchwork knit together
all stitched with tattered ends
Well, I've spent my life inside
The Cave mistaking shadows for the light
Now I'm free to finally walk outside
& feel the warmth surround me
Oh, let it in
What is sacred?
What is holy?
Is life not the process of dying slowly?
What is righteous?
Is all this only
a myth to pacify the lonely?
Or a truth we sacrifice atoning?
