The song title is taken from philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein's concept of Private Language, where hypothetically the words of said language are known only to the speaker individually, referent to an innate & direct experience; a solipsistic linguistics of sorts.
Wittgenstein argued in his later work that this concept of a Private Language would at best be logically inconsistent, & at worst impossible, as language is functionally a social phenomenon.
What bridges the gap between an individual's private experience of reality & a coupled or group's experience? In other words, what is empathy?
The lyrics to this song were inspired by a particularly destructive car wreck I witnessed the aftermath of some years ago. I was frustrated & impatient while stuck in standstill traffic, before realizing what had caused it. & then once I saw the wreckage strewn across the highway, my temperament flipped from selfish to sympathetic. I guess sometimes it takes a collision of matter, or maybe more specifically put, a collision of what matters to put reality into perspective.
lyrics
Shattered glass beside me
Brings to mind a light that shines
On what used to be
What used to be complete
Now left behind where worlds collide
Sharing gravity
Now intwined what used to be
What used to be apart
Now confined people passing
Preoccupied, let the parallel slide
Consistently dividing
Seemingly, where there's no hiding
Of a language felt between
Until intersecting
Let this become
Connection
